Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime with Auden’s Col trek, a journey from Gangotri to Kedarnath, considered by many experienced hikers as one of the toughest treks in India. This challenging trail is undoubtedly a bucket-list experience for seasoned trekkers.

Auden’s Col Trek – Prerequisites:

  • Completion of at least 5 high altitude treks going above ~ 4500 m/15000 ft.
  • Minimum of 2 Difficult grade treks reaching beyond 5000 m/16500 ft (e.g., Pin Parvati Pass, Ronti Saddle, Parang La, etc.).
  • Excellent physical condition with no prior acclimatization issues at high altitude.

Suggested Itinerary for Auden’s Col Trek:

  • Day 01: Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri – 250 km – 10/11 hours. Lodge accommodation.
  • Day 02: At Gangotri. Active acclimatization day. Height gain exercise/half-day hike. Lodge.
  • Day 03: Trek from Gangotri to Nala camp.
  • Day 04: Nala Camp to Rudragaira base camp.
  • Day 05: Rudragaira Base Camp – rest day and acclimatization.
  • Day 06: Rudragaira Base Camp to Base Camp Gangotri Group.
  • Day 07: Base Camp Gangotri Group to Auden’s Col base camp.
  • Day 08: Auden’s Col Base Camp to Khatling Glacier.
  • Day 09: Khatling Glacier to Waterfall Camp/Zero Point.
  • Day 10: Rest/recuperation day.
  • Day 11: Waterfall Camp/Zero Point to Chowki.
  • Day 12: Chowki to Masar Tal.
  • Day 13: Masar Tal to Vasuki Tal over Mayali Pass.
  • Day 14: Vasuki Tal to Kedarnath. Tent.
  • Day 15: Descent from Kedarnath to Gauri Kund – 5 hours – drive to Haridwar/Dehradun – 230 Km – 10 hours.
  • Day 16: Buffer/reserve day (mandatory and will be utilized if required during the trek).

Important Notes on the itinerary:

  • Arrive at Dehradun on Day 1 latest by 9 am. Arrange return train/bus tickets from Haridwar on Day 16 evening after 9 pm.
  • The itinerary is suggested and can vary based on team and weather conditions. For instance, if the team is well acclimatized, we may adjust the rest day at Rudgaira base camp or split the distance differently.
  • Approximate trekking distance: 100 Km.

Seasons for Auden’s Col Trek: A high-altitude trek like Auden’s Col is suitable for:

  • Summer: Mid-May to Mid June (heavy to moderate snow)
  • Post Monsoon/Fall: September (less snow, normally colder)

Each season offers a unique experience, so choose according to your preferences.

Audens col trek - GVH

Access to Trek Base (Gangotri, 250 Km from Dehradun): Depending on the number of trekkers, a car pickup from Dehradun to Gangotri and return from Badrinath can be arranged, with costs shared among trekkers. Pay directly to the driver.

If reaching Gangotri independently:

  • Direct buses from Haridwar (Roadways bus stand) to Gangotri start at 4 am. This 300 Km journey can take 13/14 hours.
  • From Dehradun, take the morning bus at 5 am (beside the railway station) for Uttarkashi town. Reach Uttarkashi by 2 pm and then take a bus to Gangotri starting at 2/2:30 pm. Shared vehicles/Tata Sumos are also available.

  • Participants are required to arrive in Dehradun by morning on Day 1 of the trek. The return journey to Dehradun is scheduled for Day 15 in the evening, around 8-9 pm. Please make sure to arrange your tickets for both the inward and return journeys accordingly.

Depending on the number of trekkers, we may arrange a car pickup from Dehradun to Gangotri and return from Badrinath. The cost will be shared equally among the trekkers opting for this service, with payment made directly to the driver. Currently, Tata Sumo/Maxx type vehicles charge ₹6000 for a drop from Haridwar to Joshimath, accommodating 5-7 persons. Similarly, Ransi to Haridwar costs ₹5000-6000. This amounts to approximately ₹2000 to ₹3000 per person (including pick up and drop) when shared with fellow trekkers.

Alternatively, if you wish to reach Joshimath on your own by public transportation:

  • Direct buses from Haridwar (Roadways bus stand, opposite the railway station) to Joshimath start at 4 am. However, availability depends on the season and road conditions. This approximately 280 km journey can take 12/13 hours.

How to Reach Haridwar:

For treks in Garhwal, reaching Haridwar is typically necessary. Rishikesh, another 25 km from Haridwar, is considered a gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas. You can fly or take a train to New Delhi from any part of India.

  • There are direct trains from Kolkata to Haridwar.
    • Kumbha Express: Train No. 12369 (Arrives in Haridwar by 5 pm; Spend the night in Haridwar and start your onward journey by car next morning)
    • Upasana Express: Train No. 12327 (Arrives in Haridwar by 5 pm; Spend the night in Haridwar and start your onward journey by car next morning)
    • Doon Express: Train No. 13009 (Do not book this train if you plan to continue your journey immediately the next morning)
  • Avoid booking waitlisted (WL) tickets in AC classes (1A/2A/3A) or Chair Car (CC). Book Sleeper class (SL)/Second Sitting class (2S) tickets, which generally have more seats/berths and a better chance of confirmation.
  • You can easily reach Haridwar from New Delhi by train or bus (approximately 5/6 hours), covering around 210 km.

By Train: Several trains are suitable for reaching Haridwar and operate daily.

  • DDN Janshtbdi: Train No. 12055 (Arrives in Haridwar @ 7:30 pm; a good choice for spending the night in Haridwar and having a long drive the next day)
  • Nanda Devi Express: Train No. 12205 (Arrives in Haridwar early morning @ 4 am)
  • Utkal Express: Train No. 18477 (Arrives in Haridwar @ 9 pm)
  • Mussoorie Express: Train No. 14041 (Arrives in Haridwar @ 5:45 am)

By Bus: Government road transport buses from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, etc., are frequently available during the day and night from Kashmiri Gate ISBT. Tickets are available onboard for these regular buses.

  • For privately operated buses, you can book online from various portals. Choose a boarding point according to your convenience. Overnight Volvo/AC/Push-back bus services are available.

Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun (Airport Code: DED) is 35 km away from Haridwar. This airport is accessible from Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. Flights are mostly via Delhi.

Night Accommodations in Haridwar: Trekkers arriving the day before their trek journey need to spend the night in Haridwar. Several options are available for accommodations, ranging from premium to budget options. Privately operated hotels/lodges, as well as state-run tourist rest houses and Dharmshalas, are available.

  • State-run GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) operates Hotel Rahi just beside the bus stand and opposite the Haridwar Railway Station, offering reliable and decent standard accommodations. Online booking is available through the GMVN website.

Return from Haridwar: Usually, you arrive in Haridwar from any trek base by 7/8 pm in the evening. You can take any train after 9 pm or utilize the regular bus services mentioned above to reach Delhi or your homeward journey directly on the same night.

Acclimatisation Day at Gangotri

Return to your lodge in Gangotri and rest for the night.
Day 3

Trek from Gangotri to Nala Camp


Begin your trek from Gangotri towards Nala Camp, immersing yourself in the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.
Enjoy the scenic beauty and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the surroundings as you trek towards Nala Camp.
Set up camp upon reaching Nala Camp and unwind amidst nature’s embrace.
Day 4

Nala Camp to Rudragaira Base Camp


Resume your trek from Nala Camp towards Rudragaira Base Camp, traversing through diverse terrain and experiencing the raw wilderness of the region.
Take breaks along the way to soak in the majestic vistas and capture memorable moments amidst the mountains.
Arrive at Rudragaira Base Camp, where you’ll spend the night, surrounded by towering peaks and pristine wilderness.
Day 5

Rest and Acclimatisation Day at Rudragaira Base Camp


Utilize this day for rest and acclimatization at Rudragaira Base Camp, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude and prepare for the challenging trek ahead.
Engage in light activities, such as short walks or stretching exercises, to maintain your physical well-being.
Take in the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and relish the serenity of the Himalayan wilderness.
Day 6

Trek from Rudragaira Base Camp to Base Camp Gangotri Group


Continue your trek from Rudragaira Base Camp towards Base Camp Gangotri Group, following the designated trail through rugged terrain and alpine meadows.
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural landscape as you trek towards your destination, capturing moments of tranquility and solitude amidst the mountains.

Trek from Base Camp Gangotri Group to Auden's Col Base Camp

Day 11

Trek from Waterfall Camp/Zero Point to Chowki


Resume your trek from Waterfall Camp/Zero Point towards Chowki, descending through verdant valleys and picturesque landscapes.
Enjoy the gentle descent as you trek towards your destination, relishing the sights and sounds of the Himalayan wilderness.
Arrive at Chowki and set up camp for the night, reminiscing about your journey and sharing experiences with your fellow trekkers.
Day 12

Trek from Chowki to Masar Tal


Embark on the final leg of your trek from Chowki towards Masar Tal, trekking through dense forests and alpine meadows.
Take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and pristine lakes as you ascend towards Masar Tal, capturing the beauty of the Himalayan landscape.
Arrive at Masar Tal and set up camp beside the tranquil waters of the lake, celebrating the successful completion of your trekking adventure.
Day 13

Trek from Masar Tal to Vasuki Tal over Mayali Pass


Begin your trek from Masar Tal towards Vasuki Tal, crossing over Mayali Pass and traversing through high-altitude terrain.

Day 14

Trek from Vasuki Tal to Kedarnath

Day 15

Descent from Kedarnath to Gauri Kund and Drive to Haridwar/Dehradun


Bid farewell to Kedarnath and embark on the descent towards Gauri Kund, trekking through scenic landscapes and serene valleys.
Reach Gauri Kund and board a vehicle for the drive back to Haridwar/Dehradun, covering a distance of 230 km in approximately 10 hours.
Reflect on your unforgettable trekking experience as you journey back to civilization, carrying with you memories that will last a lifetime.
Day 16

Buffer Day


Keep this day as a mandatory buffer/reserve day, to be utilized if required during the trek for any unforeseen circumstances or rest purposes.

Inclusions:
One night’s accommodation at Gangotri (Day 2) and one night at Kedarnath (Day 14) in a lodge on a sharing basis with dinner provided. Uttarkashi accommodation and meals are NOT included.
 All meals during the trek (starting from Day 2 lunch and ending with Day 14 dinner). Regular Indian-style nutritious vegetarian food including eggs during the trek, breakfast packed/hot lunch (depending upon the time you reach a campsite), snacks, dinner along with coffee/tea/soup.
 Excellent trekking guide, who will be a local to this particular area and has profound knowledge of the trekking trails around. We will provide one guide for every 5 trekkers. At least one guide will be mountaineering course(s) certified.
 Specialised Cook, Support staff, and High Altitude Porters (HAP) for carrying the central logistics of the trek.
 Stay in tents (2/3 persons dome-shaped tents) on a sharing basis during the trek.
 Camping equipment like Sleeping bag, Carry mattress. (Bring your sleeping if you have a high altitude specific personal Sleeping Bag. This is always better for hygienic reasons.). Any technical equipment like static/dynamic rope, carabiners, sling, ice axe, gaiters, micro spikes/crampon, etc.
 Kitchen tent and toilet tent as required during the trek.
 All permit fees, camping charges, and forest levies required for the trek.
 Processing of Inner Line Permit (ILP).
 Basic Medical & First Aid kit.
Travel and Medical insurance policy (covering illness, AMS, evacuation, accidents, etc) covering high-altitude trekking and mountaineering up to 6500 m. (For Indian nationals it is included in the TREK FEE, up to 60 years of age). It covers your trek as well as your return journey to Dehradun.
 Mandatory insurance for all support staff.

Exclusions:
Transportation from Dehradun to Gangotri and return from Gauri Kund (₹ 3000 – 4000 per person for the pickup and drop when shared with fellow trekkers)
 Accommodation and meals at Uttarkashi.
Note that offloading of rucksacks is NOT permitted on this trek. You need to carry your backpack along with all your personal belongings, sleeping bag, and sleeping mattress (provided by GVH or your one). This is mandatory for a difficult trek and is aimed at the safety of the trekkers individually. A trekker must be physically fit to carry a rucksack of 12 to 15 kg comfortably at high altitudes.
Cost of buffer/reserve day, i.e. Day 16. If we use this during trekking, you need to pay an additional ₹ 6000. This will be collected at Kedarnath after the trek.
Any tip/gratuity to the GVH supports staff.
Anything that is NOT mentioned in the “Inclusions” or personal.

Booking:

  • We assume that you have read and understood our “Terms & Conditions” (https://greenvalleyhimalayas.com/terms-and-conditions) before Booking a trek/tour.
  • To reserve your place in a scheduled Fixed Departure trek or a Customised/Private trek pay 25% of the TREK/TOUR FEE as the initial “Booking Deposit”. You can pay by Net banking/Draft/Cheque/Credit/Debit/AMEX cards. This will ensure your participation in the desired trek and we will reserve your place on the scheduled date. You need to pay the remaining amount at least 15 days before the Trek Starting Date.
  • If you book a Trek/Tour before 14 days or less from the Trek/Tour Starting Date, you need to pay the full TREK/TOUR FEE.

 Cancellations:

  • “Booking Amount” i.e.25% of the TREK/TOUR FEE is Non-Refundable at any stage.
  • If in case you are not able to make it due to unavoidable reasons (s), we provide you avery flexible choice of Shifting to another trek within the next one year. One year is counted from the starting date of the trek/tour you booked initially with us.
  • In case you postpone your trip you need to inform a minimum of 15 days before the trek/tour starting date. (Though we suggest to inform us earlier if know)
  • In case you postpone a trek/tour 15 days before the scheduled Trek/Tour Starting date or prior, you may shift to another group of the same trek/tour scheduled in the same season or within the next one year. You may shift to another suitable route also. For changing any, you need our approval first. Your request must be in written communication through your registered email with us.
  • If you cancel/postpone a trek/tour from 14 days to 8 days before the tour starting date, your Booking Amount is Non-Refundable. We will not take any requests for shifting dates. We will charge 50% of the amount as Cancellation Charges and process a refund of the remaining 50%. You may also shift to another group within next year but 25% Booking Amount will be deemed as Cancellation Charge and the rest amount will be transferred to the shifted group.
  • If you cancel a trek/tour 7 days (i.e. a week) before the Trek/Tour Starting Date or later, there will be NO REFUND.
  • In case of any unforeseen incident including but not limited to natural calamities like flood, earthquake, landslide, forest fire, or any political unrest, if we are compelled to cancel the trek/trip, you will be entitled to redeem the full amount for the same/similar kind of trek/trip within next one year.
